Modelling Tips

Try to meet the industry's standard requirements. Most male models are between 5' 11" and 6' 2" and under 175 pounds. Males can start a modeling career from the age range of 16 to 25 and their careers can last well into their 40s, which is much more relaxed than their female counterparts. Don't worry about being all around perfection, if one body part is exceptional, there's work for hand models and eyewear models, too.

Keep toned. Although the modeling industry doesn't want a body builder's frame, they do want a fit and healthy appearance.

Apart from good height and physique, the face and talent are also crucial for a model. You need to take care of your skin and the face along with developing your acting and other talents that are vital for the industry.

Create a portfolio. Get several head shots and full body shots in both sportswear and business attire taken. Keep information like clothing size, height and weight on the back for potential clients to look at.

Be persistent. Even today's top models have been rejected more than once. If one agency passes on you, think of it as an opportunity to find a better agency.

Keep a flexible schedule. Once an agent starts booking shoots, a model must be ready to be on location on short notice. A passport is a must for any model.

Research the agency carefully, always make sure you find an agency that is going to give you the best out of your career, most of the top agencies look after their models well and will give you the help and advice needed, but don’t be afraid to use an agent if you make it with an agency and let the agent do the hard work like negotiating.

Nowadays there are so many ways to get into modelling, local newspapers often run competitions, websites often accept submissions, rejection doesn’t mean you haven’t got what it takes, but always be realistic.

David Gandy

David James Gandy (born 19 February 1980) is an English model. After winning a televised competition in 2001, Gandy became a successful model. In an industry dominated by skinny males, Gandy's muscular build caught the eye of Italian fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana. For several years, the duo featured him in their campaigns and fashion shows, ultimately leading other designers to move to a more masculine standard. Gandy has been the face of D&G's Light Blue fragrance since 2006, shooting multiple campaigns and touring internationally as the brand's ambassador. The increase in his popularity and name recognition resulted in a broad portfolio of clients, magazine covers, editorial photo shoots, interviews, industry awards and television appearances.

Having gained a reputation for his personal style, Gandy began writing a blog for British Vogue and lifestyle articles for Telegraph Men. He also launched two mobile apps: one for physical fitness and the other for style tips. Soon thereafter, Gandy was appointed by the British Fashion Council to their committee for 'London Collections: Men' to be a representative of the British fashion industry.

In 2014, he moved beyond modelling to designing his own range of underwear, lounge-wear and swimwear for Marks & Spencer, which became one of the company's top-selling clothing lines. Gandy was repeatedly included on British GQ's list of 'Best Dressed Men' and was named the 'Most Stylish Man of the Year' in 2015 at their Men of the Year awards gala.

Gandy started his own production company and has invested in small companies and film projects. He has also participated in numerous charity fundraisers, most prominently as the celebrity ambassador for the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Style for Soldiers charity and the 'Blue Steel Appeal', his own non-profit foundation. A car enthusiast, Gandy started writing car reviews for GQ in 2010 and has made televised appearances on Classic Car Show. He obtained a racing license in 2012 and competed in the 2013 and 2015 Mille Miglia Italian endurance races as well as powerboat races with Martini Racing.
